Release & Renew

Inspired by Grounded Ritual Go to the source ↗

Rituals follow a natural rhythm: letting go of the old before inviting in the new. Every card here is a whole ritual with both movements in it — the release and the renewal — written out in order so you can read it while you do it. One can take five minutes. What matters is the authentic meaning it holds for you, not how fancy or perfectly scripted it is.

Fire — what needs transforming?

Burning Ceremony
I will write down what I am releasing and let the flames transform my words into smoke and ash.
  1. Set out a fireproof container, water within reach, nothing nearby that could catch
  2. Write down what I wish to release — a fear, an old belief, a grievance
  3. Hold the paper and really feel the weight of what I am letting go
  4. Light it carefully and place it in the container
  5. Watch the flames turn my words into smoke and ash, and never leave it unattended
  6. On fresh paper, write the intention I am inviting in
  7. Light a candle for it and speak the intention aloud as the flame burns
  8. Sit with the candle a while, on the new direction
Candle Meditation
I will light a candle for what I am inviting and stay with the flame a while.

Sit comfortably with the candle at eye level and take three deep breaths to centre myself. As I light it, I state my intention aloud, then gaze softly at the flame, letting any thought that arises drift away like smoke. When it is complete, I thank the flame and put it out mindfully.

Water — what needs to flow?

Stone Release
I will breathe my burden into a stone and let moving water carry it away.

I hold a stone in my hands and breathe into it, and with each exhale imagine transferring the burden into the stone. I name what I am releasing, aloud or silently, and feel the weight of the stone as the weight of what I am letting go. When I am ready I drop it into moving water and watch it carried away. Then I cup fresh water in my hands, state what I am inviting into the space, and drink it or splash it on my face.

Ritual Bath
I will let the water carry off what I am not keeping, and seal in what is left.

Entering the water I set the intention: I release what no longer serves me. As it flows over me I see it washing the day away, and pay attention to how that feels going down and away from me. Finishing, I change the intention — I am cleansed and renewed — feel the fresh energy on my skin, and imagine sealing that state in as I dry off.

Bowl of Intentions
I will speak my intentions over fresh water and leave them under moonlight.

I fill a bowl with fresh water, which stands for possibility and beginnings, and sit quietly with what I want to invite in. I speak the intentions over the water, or write them on small pieces of paper, fold them and place them in. Flower petals or a small floating candle honour them. If I can, I leave the bowl overnight under moonlight, and in the morning pour the water into the earth as an offering.

Earth — what needs grounding?

Burial Release
I will give it to the earth, knowing earth transforms what it takes.
  1. Write what I am releasing, or choose something biodegradable to stand for it
  2. Dig a small hole in the earth
  3. Hold it and speak to it — acknowledge what it represented, thank it for its lessons
  4. Place it in the hole and cover it with soil
  5. Know that earth will transform it, as it turns fallen leaves into nourishment
  6. Plant a seed in the same place, saying what is growing instead
  7. Water it, and return to tend it, letting its growth mirror my own
Grounding Practice
I will stand on the earth and let it steady me.

I stand or sit directly on the earth, close my eyes, and feel the solid support beneath me. I imagine roots growing from the base of my spine down into the ground: with each exhale I send stress and excess energy down through them, and with each inhale draw up stable, grounded energy. I stay until I feel centred, then thank the earth for its support.

Stone Altar
I will keep stones for what I am releasing and what I am building where I will see them.

I collect stones that call to me and cleanse them in sunlight or moonlight, or wash them. Each is given its meaning — one for what I am releasing, others for what I am building — and arranged somewhere in the house I will pass. I spend time with them daily, even briefly, touching them and remembering what they hold. When an intention is fulfilled, I return that stone to nature with gratitude.

Air — what needs clearing?

Breath Release
I will exhale forcefully until the breath has carried away what I am releasing.

Sitting comfortably with my eyes closed, I take a deep breath and identify what I want to release. I hold it briefly, feeling the weight of what I am carrying, then exhale forcefully, imagining the breath carrying it away — seven to ten times, or until I feel lighter, ending on one long exhale. Then I breathe slowly, drawing in fresh clear energy, and name what I am inviting: clarity, peace, inspiration.

Wind and Voice
I will let the wind carry my voice and my release away.

I face into the wind, take a deep breath, and exhale with sound — a long ahhh — letting the wind carry my voice and my release away. I repeat it, feeling each exhale lighten me, and speak it plainly: I release… Then I open my arms to the wind, breathe deeply, and say what I am inviting: I welcome…

Bell Clearing
I will ring it once and listen until the sound has completely gone.

I sit in the space I want to clear and ring the bell once, listening until the sound completely fades and seeing the stagnant energy disperse with it. I ring it again, setting the intention for what I want to invite, and let that tone fill the space. A third ring seals the ritual.

When five minutes is what I have?

Wash Off the Day
I will wash the day's stress off my hands, then speak one thing I am grateful for.

I run the water and wash the day's stress off my hands, watching it go down and away. Then I speak one thing I am grateful for, aloud.

Full Moon Ritual
I will take the full moon as a sacred pause: one thing released, one thing welcomed.

I sit with the moon in view, or just outside, and name what I am ready to release from this cycle — then do one symbolic act for it: burn it, bury it, breathe it out, let water take it. I name what I wish to welcome in its place and do one act for that too: a candle, a seed, fresh water, a hand on my heart. I finish by saying what I will tend before the next full moon.
