Get Good First
Inspired by Cal Newport · So Good They Can't Ignore You Go to the source ↗
Loving your work tends to follow being good at it rather than come before. Every card here is a day's worth of getting better at something specific, and of spending what that earns on the life you want.
What am I getting better at?
Practise the Hard Part
I will spend the time on the part I am worst at, not the part I enjoy.
I name the skill specifically enough to practise, work the part I am worst at, and keep going a little past comfortable.
Ask for the Hard Feedback
I will put the work in front of someone whose judgment I trust and ask what is weak.
I show it to someone better than me and ask what is weak, then sit with the answer long enough to use it — and redo something I had already called done.
Find Out How It Landed
I will learn what the work actually did rather than assume.
What is that buying me?
Take the Hard Piece
I will take on the work that is valuable precisely because it is hard.
Spend What I've Earned
I will use what I am good at to ask for something I want — time, direction, different work.
Make a Small Bet
I will try one small version of a bigger idea, cheap enough to be wrong about.
I try the small version, cheap enough to be wrong about, and notice what became possible that wasn't before.
Choose Better Over Safer
I will pick the option that makes me better rather than the one that feels safest.
